Store History

Mike's Bikes and Fitness I started in the bicycle business in 1974 when the local Coast to Coast became a Schwinn dealer. I then became manager of the Schwinn shop in April of 1975. I worked for many years learning all the ends and outs of the business. In August of 1982 I purchased the Schwinn franchise from the previous owner and began my journey in business on my own. I quickly picked up the Trek brand which was the best decision I've ever made. Who would have thought that Schwinn would go through 2 bankruptcies. The first came in 1992.
The courts decided that the Schwinn family would never have control again and was sold. The Schwinn brand did well for about 5 years and then was sold again. The new company did not have experience in the bicycle business and quickly made bad decisions resulting in bankruptcy in July of 2001. The courts then sold the bicycle side of the company to Pacific who owns quite a few brands which are sold to Wal Mart. That's where Schwinn is today, and the reason we dropped them from our line.
I had mentioned getting Trek and commenting that this was the best decision that I've ever made. Trek also owns Gary Fisher, Klein, and makes the Lemond line. I also picked up Haro and Redline for the BMX and Freestyle Lines
